All workshops can be customized to your school’s needs. They ‘snap together,’ building one on another. Continuing Education Units are awarded to participating teachers.
Introducing the Library of Congress
Take a guided tour of the Library’s site, www.loc.gov with emphasis on the needs of busy teachers.
Introducing Primary Sources
A hands-on, minds-on workshop where we don’t just talk about primary sources, we use them, handle them, think about them.
Today in History
There is more than one way to use this terrific resource. Make it relevant across the curriculum.
Making Documents Come Alive
Historic documents aren’t just words. Learn techniques to help your students understand what they really mean.
Creating your Own Primary Source Sets
Pull together a topical collection of images, documents, maps, music and more. You can collect the artifacts, then print, laminate, even create classroom activities. This workshop works well when teachers of the same grade level pool their ideas to build similar collections.
Creating Classroom Activities
Once you have that great primary source set, what can you do with it? We’ll ‘play’ with some sample activities, then you’ll create your own. Like the workshop above, this workshop lends itself to collaborative work between teachers of the same grade level.
Creating Classroom Posters
Using Word or Publisher, you can create posters that use primary sources to illustrate your curriculum. We’ll take care of the printing on 11x17 paper.
Reading the News: Chronicling America
The Library’s newest project brings historic newspapers into your classroom. Learn different strategies for using these and other historic records in the science, social studies and language arts curriculum.

Who We Serve
The Mars Hill TPS Program serves K12 educators throughout Western North Carolina, collaborating with the former AAM staff at Montreat College, Brevard College and Western Carolina University. Although workshops are occasionally held on the Mars Hill campus, we can come to a computer lab or library near you! Call or email to schedule a time and place.
