The Rainmaker, by N. Richard Nash. Set in a drought-devastated rural town in the West in Depression-era America, spinsterish Lizzie Curry keeps house for her father and two brothers on the family ranch. The future looks bleak; there’s no sign of rain, and no prospects for a mate for Lizzie, whose family seems to worry more about her lack of marriage prospects than about their dying cattle. A charming, charismatic stranger named “Starbuck” arrives and promises to bring rain…in exchange for $100. His arrival sets off a series of events which change…everything, but in unexpected ways. Hope, self-acceptance, and renewal in the face of hard times make this a play for today. Made into a hit musical in 1963, 110 in the Shade.
