The Mars Hill College Wellness Center, located in Robinson Hall, is the health facility for the campus community. The Wellness Center staff provides primary care for full-time students but also attempts to assist students by teaching them preventive health care. This is accomplished through films, informal discussions, pamphlets, etc. The Wellness Center is part of the Student Life staff and works closely with this office in order to assist in each student's physical and emotional development during his/her college experience.
A physician, physician's assistant, or nurse practitioner associated with the Hot Springs Health Program assesses sick and injured students at the center on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday from 9:00 a.m. until 10:00 a.m. (changes are posted). Students are encouraged to schedule these visits as a limited number of students can be seen at this time. Others will be triaged according to need. It is recommended that walk-ins arrive no later than 9:30 a.m. as late arrivals may not have the opportunity to see the provider. Students who need medical assistance outside these posted hours are strongly encouraged to seek the nurses' care at the Wellness Center and may be treated according to physician standing orders. The nurse may opt to schedule an appointment at the Mars Hill Medical Center for physician assessment. Students who present through the Wellness Center for appointments at Mars Hill Medical Center are not required to pay a co-payment at the time of the visit as long as proof of insurance is in hand. Students who have college insurance will also be required to have the completed insurance form at the time of the visit. The student or his/her parent will be billed for any unpaid balance. Physician services at the Wellness Center are at no additional cost to the student. This service is only offered to full-time, regular students.
The Wellness Center offers limited over-the-counter medications for the most common ailments and a few basic laboratory services. There is a charge for laboratory services, for immunizations, and for supplies such as ACE wraps or unreturned borrowed equipment (e.g. heating pads, crutches).

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Medical Examination Forms
I just had a sports physical for my high
school; can I use that for my college physical?
The Mars Hill College form is required. If your doctor is willing,
he can complete the college form and sign and date it as of the
date of the actual physical. The physical assessment MUST BE WITHIN
ONE YEAR OF STARTING COLLEGE. For example, you had a physical July
13, 2002 to participate in fall sports at your high school, but
you are not going to be starting at Mars Hill College until August
22, 2003. You will be required to get a NEW physical.

I am a transfer student and will be starting
as a junior here at Mars Hill College. Can I use the physical I
had at my previous college?
You are still required to complete all portions of the Mars Hill
College physical form and sign the statement that the information
is true to the best of your knowledge, which also gives permission
to treat. You can attach your previous physical form IF it meets
the Mars Hill College requirements including the lab studies. Again,
the assessment MUST BE WITHIN ONE YEAR of starting at Mars Hill
College.

Can
I bring my physical form
with me to orientation?
Physical forms are required prior to orientation so that they can
be reviewed to insure they are complete. You cannot participate
in orientation without a completed physical form. Many students
who bring their forms with them have missing information, and this
delays participation in orientation. STUDENTS ARE REQUIRED TO HAVE COMPLETED PHYSICAL TURNED IN PRIOR TO FINAL REGISTRATION.

What is required for the physical assessment?
In addition to the systems assessment from head to toe, you need
a simple eye exam using an eye chart in the doctor's office, a simple
hearing test such as the whisper test, a urinalysis, and hemoglobin
or hematocrit. Make sure all blanks are filled in.

What immunizations are required?
North Carolina has laws regarding immunization requirements that
ALL colleges must adhere to. You will be required to show proof of Diphtheria, Tetanus, Pertussis, DTP
series and Td booster within the last 10 years, a single MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella) dose
plus an additional measles vaccination (two MMR satisfy this requirement).
You are also required to have a TB skin test with a negative result.
Return to FAQs
Are there any other immunization requirements?
Mars Hill College does not require students to have any more immunizations
than is required by state law. If you are planning to enroll in
the Athletic Training program, you should consider the Hepatitis
B series. You may be able to obtain this through your local health
department free of charge if you are under 19 years of age. The
American College Health Association and the CDC (Center for Disease
Control) do recommend the Menactra meningococcal vaccine, especially for those
students who will reside in the dormitory environment. You might
also consider the varicella vaccine if you have never had the chicken
pox. Students diagnosed with chicken pox will be required to go
home or make other living arrangements to ensure a safe environment
for the rest of the student body.

What
if I can't find my immunization
records?
Mars Hill College must meet North Carolina immunization guidelines
or risk a substantial fine. Contact your high school, health department,
ask a parent or guardian, or call your doctor. If the doctor you
saw as a child is no longer in practice, call the local hospital
and see if the records are in storage somewhere. If you still cannot
find any records, you will be required to start a new series of
immunizations to meet these requirements.

Can
I get any of my immunizations
or the required lab work
done at the Mars Hill College
Wellness Center?
The Madison County Health
Department will be holding
an immunization clinic at
the college Wellness Center
during orientation. Through
the health department, the
MMR and Td Booster will
be offered free of charge.
They will be offering the
TB test at a cost of $10.00
payable to the health department.
A urinalysis and hemoglobin
can be completed at the
Wellness Center at a cost
of $5.00 per test. The
Wellness Center does not
file insurance; all costs
for services at the Wellness
Center are on a cash basis
and payment is expected
at that time. Early
and late arrivals will be
required to obtain immunizations
and the TB test by going
to the health department
or local clinic.
