Why do Students Seek Counseling?
College is a time of growth and change; it is common for difficulties to arise during this period of life. Many students seek counseling for a range of concerns that may include academic pressures, depression, anxiety & stress, relationship problems, low self-esteem, sexual assault, eating problems, substance abuse, bipolar disorder, and many other issues. A student does not have to be mentally ill or “crazy” to utilize counseling services.
What Counseling Services are Available?
The Mars Hill College Counseling Center is a place where students can talk through their problems and/or concerns in a private, confidential setting with a trained professional. Available services include individual, couples, and group counseling; referral to community resources; crisis intervention; workshops; and a variety of outreach and consultation services.
Pastoral counseling is available through the Chaplain’s office, Rev. Todd Boling, ext.1299, tboling@mhc.edu
Career Counseling is available at Lifeworks. Contact Gill Bosonetto, ext. 1655, gbosonetto@mhc.edu
What Can I Expect When I Visit the Counseling Center?
You will have the opportunity to meet with a counselor who is caring and who respects your confidentiality. During your first visit to the Counseling Office, the counselor will ask about your current concerns. You and the counselor will then discuss how best to meet your needs and goals, whether your concerns can be addressed in one or a few sessions, or whether you need referral to a counselor who is better matched to help with your particular needs.
IN CASE OF EMERGENCY
During office hours, call the Counseling Center, ext. 1196 or 689-1196. If staff is not available, or if after hours, do not leave a message at the Counseling Center. Instead, call Campus Security, ext. 1230 or 689-1230. The professional staff on duty will be contacted immediately.
