1. What is the name of Conley’s new friend at school?  How does Conley describe him?
2. What form of parental control does Conley’s mother use to stop her son from doing things like riding the back of buses and haggling with muggers?
3. What was the confrontation during the school assembly all about?  Which side wins out, and why?

Discussion Questions & Journal Ideas:

1. Describe some of the differences Conley notes between the white and “darker” sides of the gym during the confrontation in the assembly (144).   What strategies does Conley use to fit in? 
2. Why do you think the incident with Queen is so crushing for Conley and his friends?
3. Why is Conley on the “darker” side of the gym?  What role does Jerome play in this, and how does Conley describe his influence on his life at this point?
