The
Department of Health, Physical Education
& Recreation offers concentrations in sports management, sports science,
education (secondary), recreation administration andrecreation resource
management. Additionally, elementary education majors can choose to concentrate
in physical education.
The curriculum offers academic preparation for a variety of careers in the
areas of physical education and recreation. Internship opportunities provide
practical learning experiences in a variety of professional settings. Students
in the teacher education concentration will complete a student-teaching internship
which provides practical experiences and learning opportunities in a public
school environment.
Students majoring in sports management will be assigned to an appropriate
internship site based on their particular career goals. Students in the Sports
Science major will complete a general degree in physical education plus an
appropriate internship. Students completing a degree in Physical Education
may become eligible for licensure by organizations such as the North Carolina
State Department of Public Instruction (NCSDPI) and others.
Students
completing a degree in recreation may be eligible for certification by such
organizations as the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA), and
the North Carolina Recreation and Park Society (NCRPS) depending upon the
concentration of the major.
