Statement from Mars Hill College President Dan Lunsford regarding an assault which occurred on campus:

Dear Students, Faculty, and Staff:

The recent assault in Myers and the subsequent media attention have caused significant concern among students, faculty, and staff, as well as parents and alumni.  Unfortunately, as you know, this is not the first incident we’ve had to deal with this semester. While we may not always choose to address these incidents in the mass media, you need to know that we take these situations very seriously, and our top concern is the safety and well-being of all members of our campus community.

To that end, I have directed staff to take some specific actions that will enhance the safety measures in certain locations on campus, particularly in and around our residential facilities. We will have more residential living staff on duty. We will have more security officers on duty, including added patrols from outside agencies. We may be adding video surveillance to several campus locations. We do and will continue to fully cooperate with law enforcement agencies in all incidents.

There are two messages I want you to receive from this memo: first, that the college administration has, as its ultimate concern, your safety. Second, these types of behavior stop now. Perpetrators will be held accountable to the fullest extent under the college conduct and judicial procedures, in addition to prosecution and penalties in the legal system.
