The home-team advantage is especially exciting for the MHC Lion’s Cycling Team, as it comes to the competition with a decisive first-place national ranking among Division II schools. A total of points from A, B, and C racers, competing in road race, criterium and time trial events gives Mars Hill first-place with 314 points. The next-closest competitors are the College of Charleston with 162 points and King College with 161 points.

“The number one goal for the team this spring is to defend the number one national ranking,” said coach Hugh Moran. “In order to do that, we’ll have to win the conference, so we can send as many people to the national championships as possible.”

If Mars Hill finishes the season in first place, the team will automatically be qualified to send 14 riders to national competition, planned for May 6 – 8 in Madison, Wisconsin.

“The more people we have at the national championships, the better our chances are of defending our number one ranking” Moran said. “That would be a huge accomplishment.”

In individual rankings, MHC’s Stephanie Bunnett is ranked first among the region’s female A-riders with 510 points, while Michael Robinson is ranked third among male A-riders with 318 points. Other female Lions in the top rankings include: Klara Rossouw, ranked fifth with 246 points; and Yolanda Colon, at 13th with 111 points. Male A-riders from MHC in the rankings include: Maitland Jones, who is ranked ninth with 164 points and Sebastian Scherf is ranked 17th with 111 points.

Events to be held on or near the Mars Hill College campus this weekend include:

• Team and individual time trials, beginning at 9 am, with start and finish at Beech Glen Community Center. (2936 Beech Glen Road, Mars Hill)
• Road Race, from 1 until 6 pm, beginning and ending at Bull Creek Baptist Church (2142 Bull Creek Road, Marshall NC)
• Criterium, from 8 am until 12 noon at Biltmore Square Mall (800 Brevard Road, Asheville)
