Free Dance Workshop Offered
High School and college-age students of any dance level are invited to a free hip hop workshop at Mars Hill University on December 10, led by Joe Barron, a member of the national champion Bailey Mountain Cloggers.
The event is called “Mars Hill Take Over,” and will take place in the downstairs studio of McConnell Hall, which is located on the upper quad of MHU. Warm up will begin at 5:45 pm. Beginner class begins at 6 pm; intermediate class begins at 7 pm; and advanced class begins at 8 pm.
Barron is a junior from Gainesville, Florida, who often uses his hip hop moves to provide variety to the Bailey Mountain Cloggers’ award-winning routines. He started dancing when he was nine years old and has learned hip hop by watching and learning others.
Other instructors at the event will be Danielle Buice Plimpton, Director of the Bailey Mountain Cloggers; and Kenny Anderson, a sophomore from Corona, California, and a member of Mars Hill’s new step team, the M. Hill Steppers. Kenny has been doing hip hop dance since he was 10 years old.
Barron said he has been considering doing such a workshop the entire time he’s been a member of the Bailey Mountain Cloggers, because he wants other people to be able to learn the style of dancing that he enjoys so much.
“When I was growing up I never had a chance to learn from someone else. I’ve met some great mentors while in college but when I was in grade school through high-school I was mostly on my own teaching myself,” he said. “My first clogging team helped me get the confidence to dance in front of a crowd. I hope that this workshop will help other young people gain confidence to dance for exercise, or on a team.”
