Mars Hill College Bonners Write Grant Projects for Local Organizations
Four western North Carolina organizations received Bonner Community Fund Grants for 2011. Grant proposals are written by Mars Hill College Bonner Scholars in collaboration with a community partner, and funded by the Bonner Foundation Endowment.
Bonner Scholars at MHC vote to select the top four proposals, which are then funded by $1,000 grants. Following are the 2011 Bonner Community Fund Grant recipients, and the Bonner scholars who wrote their proposals:
- A Hope Day Center, whose grant is being funded for the second consecutive year. The grant project will help individuals obtain birth certificates, which would allow them to have the necessary information for applying for jobs and housing. Kristina Rathburn is the Bonner Scholar who wrote the grant.
- Three Streams Family Health Center, whose grant will fund the purchase of an automatic blood pressure cuff and new manual cuffs. The automatic cuff will enable volunteers to take blood pressure more easily and more comfortably for the patient. This grant was also written by Kristina Rathburn.
- Youth Fit for Life, one of the many programs through YMCA of western NC, is receiving a grant to purchase new equipment to be used during strength training sessions in area schools. Bonner scholar Allison Vance wrote the grant.
- Mars Hill Head Start will receive funds for purchasing books, playground equipment and classroom materials. Bonner scholars Rachel Buller and Cindy Yuan wrote the grant.
