Spring Commencement Weekend Schedule

Commencement ceremonies for Mars Hill College are planned for Saturday, May 7, beginning at 9:30am in Moore Auditorium. Approximately 130 seniors are expected to receive baccalaureate degrees.

Graduation weekend will begin with the baccalaureate service, to be held Friday, May 6 at 4pm in Moore Auditorium. Rev. Monroe “Monk” Ashley, interim chaplain at Mars Hill College, will deliver the baccaulareate address to graduating seniors.

Ashley is in his second tenure as interim chaplain at Mars Hill, while the college seeks a full-time chaplain. During his career, he has held a variety of positions, including the chaplaincies of UNC Greensboro, Limestone College and Gardner-Webb University. He was also an instructor of religion and philosophy at Limestone College, an assistant professor of religion and philosophy at Gardner-Webb University, and an instructor of both expository writing and religion and philosophy at Blue Ridge Community College. In addition, he has held executive positions at Camp Ridgecrest for Boys, Kanuga Conferences and Montreat Conference Center. He is an ordained Cooperative Baptist Fellowship minister, and during his career has served as the pastor of Forestville Baptist Church in Forestville, NC, and as the associate pastor of First Baptist Church in Gaffney, SC.

Ashley holds a bachelor’s degree from Furman University and a master’s of divinity degree from Southeastern Theological Seminary. He and his wife, Roberta, live in Brevard.

Student speakers at commencement ceremonies will include: Lisa McGraw Coomer, an AGS (adult and graduate studies) elementary education major from Marshall, NC; Patrick Cash, a history major from Taylorsville, NC; and Lacey Davis, a sociology major from Hickory, NC. The invocation will be given by Breanna Mason, a biology major from Brevard.
