The Mars Hill College Model: The Teacher
Professional
A teacher preparation program based on
the Teacher Professional model will produce
educators of the highest quality for the
children in American public schools. This
trifold model requires candidates to be
grounded in the liberal arts and knowledgeable
in their content areas, well-versed in
instructional theory and its practical
application, and committed to professional
values and ethics.
As teacher educators, Norlander-Case and
Reagan assert that outstanding teachers
must have something important to
teach (that is, they must themselves be
informed), they must have the capability
to teach well what they know, and they
must continually help children through
their example, to care about learning,
themselves, and each other (1999,
p. 60).
Moreover, the Teacher Professional model
reaffirms the goals of the mission of
Mars Hill College and reflects the values
and aims of both the present curriculum
and the revised General Education curriculum
which was implemented beginning in the
fall of 2001.
