Add-on Licensure Programs (K-12)

Candidates who have completed licensure requirements in any field may earn an additional teaching license (add-on) in areas below by completing the following courses and passing Praxis II as required by the state.

Academically/Intellectually Gifted (AIG) – Coordinator:  Dr. Chris Cain
The AIG Program consists of the following four courses:

  • ED 252 Introduction to Gifted Education – 3 credit hours
  • ED 320 Multi-sensory Methods and Models of Gifted Education – 3 credit hours
  • ED 452 Curriculum Differentiation for the Gifted – 3 credit hours
  • ED 436 Assessment and Trends in Gifted Education – 3 credit hours


English as a Second Language (ESL) – Coordinator – Dr. Tom Destino
The ESL Program consists of the following six courses:

  • ED 365 Socio-cultural Foundations of Education – 3 credit hours
  • ENG 332 Structure and Usage of English – 3 credit hours
  • ENG 333 Grammar and Linguistics for TESL – 3 credit hours
  • ENG 334 Second Language and Literacy Development – 3 credit hours
  • ED 360 Issues in TESL in Public Schools – 3 credit hours
  • ED 419 Teaching of English as a Second Language in K-12 Classroom – 3 credit hours

In addition, students must have completed two (2) semesters of the same foreign language or must demonstrate proficiency in a second language.  Students whose first language is not English must demonstrate competency in English.


Reading Specialist – Coordinator:  Dr. Barbara Cary
The Reading Specialist Program consists of the following six courses:

  • ENG 334 Second Language and Literacy Development – 3 credit hours
  • ED 441 Comprehensive Strategies for Teaching Content-Based Literacy – 3 credit hours
  • ED 440 Advanced Methods for Teaching Reading – 3 credit hours
  • ED 443 Conceptual & Historical Foundations of Reading – 3 credit hours
  • ED 445 Teaching Students with Persistent Reading Problems – 3 credit hours
  • ED 444 Reading Assessment & Intervention – 3 credit hours

Special Education – Coordinator:  Dr. Chris Cain
The Special Education Program consists of the following eight courses:

  • ED 347 Socio-cultural Foundations of Education – 3 credit hours
  • ED 348 Nature/Needs of Students with Learning Disabilities – 3 credit hours
  • ED 350 Behavior Management – 3 credit hours
  • ED 416 Specialized Instructional Methods/Materials – 3 credit hours
  • ED 435 Assessment Methods, Use and Interpretation – 3 credit hours
  • ED 451 Curriculum Based Assessment – 3 credit hours
  • ED 455 Teaching Students with Persistent Reading Problems – 3 credit hours
  • ED 456 Legal Issues/Procedures Focused on Exceptional Needs Children – 3 credit hours
