Cheerleading

Cheerleaders2013w

The top priorities of the Lion Cheerleading Team are to raise school spirit, lead the crowd to support our athletic teams, and to carry on a tradition of cheerleading at Mars Hill. Anyone selected for the MHU cheerleading team is committed for an entire year. As a cheerleader you are expected to attend all practices, games, appearances, school events, study hall, and competitions. Cheerleading comes second only to academics as each athlete must maintain a GPA of 2.3 or higher to be eligible to remain on the team. Mars Hill cheerleaders practice two to three times weekly with additional practices added for game days and competitions. Weekly team workouts are required as well. Each cheerleader is also required to attend NCA summer camp. All cheerleaders cheer for home football and basketball games. Only selected individuals will travel during football season and basketball tournaments. There are several opportunities throughout the year for fundraising to cover cheerleading costs and competition fees.

If you are interested in attending, please contact Derrick Everhart, Cheerleading Coach at deverhart@mhu.edu.

Summer tryouts: June 20, 2014 - 3:00-9:15pm

*NOTE: Incoming freshmen and transfer students should plan on attending SOAR (Spring Orientation, Advising and Registration) on Saturday, June 21, as the tryout schedule does accommodate for students to attend the SOAR sessions.

All participants must bring a copy of their insurance card and current physical.

Incoming freshmen and transfer students must bring a copy of their acceptance letter to Mars Hill University.

Video tryouts will be accepted at the coach’s discretion. Videos submissions must be received by the coach no later than April 2nd.

Tryout Attire

All cheerleaders should maintain a neat and clean “Game Day” image; therefore royal blue, gold, and white should be worn at all times. There is to be absolutely NO JEWELRY and no visible tattoos allowed. Hair should be neat and pulled away from your face. Long hair should be contained in a ponytail for Friday and Saturday and half up/down on Sunday.

Cheerleading shoes should be worn for stunting and tumbling, and running shoes will need to be worn for the fitness portion of tryouts.

Tryout Requirements

During tryouts each individual will be scored by coaches on the following:

2 chants, 1 crowd cheer, fight song, jumps, tumbling, stunting, fitness test, interview

*Tumbling requirements: currently there is not a tumbling requirement; however, each cheerleader must be working towards a back handspring, at minimum.

Tryouts are open to incoming freshman, transfer, and current students in good academic standing.

We are a co-ed squad, so we will be looking for all positions on the team.

Participants are given equal opportunities to learn material, stunting, and tumbling requirements before cuts are made.
