Soda and fast food are tossed in the face from childhood on,
Progeny of a spiraling age
Fast cars, big houses, and public appearance
All changing within days
“Typical white girl,”
I can still hear them say
Growing up this way or that
Growing up white
Growing up average
Is being white wrong?
Am I the so called color “white”?
America, the land of oil and vinegar
But yet the land of mixed paints
I am not white or black or Asian or any ethnic group
I am white and black and Asian and ethnic
Not physical, but mental
These colors are a part of me
I am a part of these colors
Ethnicity bleeds
As I do
I cry
And Ethnicity cries
One house, one roof, one body
Divided, but not conquered
Loved and hated
Unity under division
Freedom, choice, ignorance, knowledge
Bright lights, dark shadows
High class, low class
Bliss, despair
The American life,
A painting by many artists’ hands.
I can say that I have grown up American.
