Essential Skills in Digital Imaging
(MCOM 373- 3 semester hours)

A practical exploration of the uses of digital imaging, this course includes
an exploration of subject choice, image composition, color, light, editing
and digital corrections. Attention will be given to the exploration of
culture through documentary. Students will need their own digital still
and/or video cameras, a small, lightweight tripod, batteries and re-charger,
sufficient memory and appropriate power converters. Students are strongly
encouraged to bring a portable hard drive or a laptop computer for image
storage and processing.
Taught by Dr. Alan Hantz, Professor of Mass Communication at UNC-Asheville.
Beginning Drawing in Italy
(Art 273, 3 semester hours)
From the birthplace of the Italian Renaissance in Florence to the Roman
Forum, students will be immersed in the rich visual traditions of Italian
culture. Working with traditional drawing media students will use sketchbooks
to chronicle their experiences and field drawing sessions to explore use
of the 2 dimensional surface. This course is designed for students of
all abilities and has no pre-requisites.
Mr. Scott Lowrey, Associate Professor of Art at Mars Hill College in
North Carolina, teaches this course.
Travel Writing for Magazines
(MCOM 367- 3 semester hours.)
A workshop in the writing of essays, articles and other professional non-fiction;
planning and gathering material, writing and marketing articles for specialized
and general interest publications. Focus on Travel writing.
Taught by Professor Doc Rossi.
Intermediate Digital Photography.
MCOM 473: 3 semester hours.
A digital imaging course for experienced photographers emphasizing advanced
digital techniques, thematic development of personal vision, as well as
sophisticated approaches to composition, exposure and color. Students
must provide their own cameras, tripods, laptops and backups.
