Albert Jessurum
Albert is a transfer student
from George Mason University. In his home country of
Venezuela, Albert discovered his love of computer science,
particularly in website development. He has brought
this love to Mars Hill College, where he is helping
the college's webmaster develop cutting-edge tools for
higher education, while completing his degree.
How did you find out
about MHC?
I was going to college in a big school setting and one
of my best
friends from back home was going to school here at Mars
Hill College.
The size of the school plus many things that my friend
kept mentioning
about the close relationship between the faculty/staff
and the students
really got me interested, since I was lacking that while
attending such
a big school. I came to play soccer and to change the
environment I was
in before, and I've been extremely pleased that I made
the decision to
transfer here.
What is your
favorite thing about being a student here?
I absolutely LOVE the diverse student body, the sense
of a close
community where you walk outside of class and it feels
like you know
everybody, lots of choices for housing, and the activities
planned for
the students. I enjoy most of the Student activities,
Intramurals, and
I’ve been getting really integrated with the Outdoor
Center lately, I’ve
enjoyed every trip I’ve been on and it’s
helped me get away from the
technology side of my personality.
What are your
future plans?
I plan on a career in Information Technology - either
in web development
or in database administration. I believe that the skills
and the close
interaction with the faculty in my career here at Mars
Hill College will
give me lots of opportunities in whatever I want to
do.
Do you feel
MHC has prepared you for the career you want?
Without a doubt! In such a big school environment as
I was before, I
would not have been able to work so closely with the
Computer Science
faculty, the webmasters or the other students. Here,
I am Albert
Jessurum - at other larger college's I am just a number.
Mars Hill
College has given me everything I need to be successful.
What is your
favorite memory of MHC?
My favorite memory (so far) is working closely in developing
the website for Lifeworks - our student service learning,
scholarships and career department. From developing
an interactive course staircase for
LAA on my beginning tasks, to working now in developing
the Job drawer,
and the soon to come out JIGSAWS database, which will
merge into one
website different aspects of the Career and Development,
Internships,
Work-Study, and Service Learning Opportunities, it’s
been a great
learning experience. The staff and other students who
work with me make
sure every day is fun and exciting!
