Master of Education
At Mars Hill University, we believe in the importance of teachers in our world. Our Education department recognizes that in preparing successful teachers in a changing world, certain sound principles about teaching—and about human curiosity, growth and motivation—endure. Our faculty has an understanding of teachers’ responsibility to teach to the heart and not just the mind. Our mission is to improve the education of students and their teachers. We carry out this mission by applying to the educational process all available knowledge about teaching and learning in the context of an increasingly diverse society and a rapidly changing global economy.
Prospective students: Education graduates who hold a teaching license and practicing teachers who wish to add the Master’s degree to their credentials are potential candidates for the progam.
Complete your degree in only six semesters:
The MHU program consists of 12, 3-credit hour courses, and one optional seminar for those students who wish to prepare for the National Board requirements while in the program. The Master of Education program includes professional studies courses, specialty courses, research courses, and a course in which students complete their culminating project. All students will complete a research project under the guidance of a faculty advisor. This inquiry project will address some aspect of education, approved by the advisor, and will be presented publically at the end of the program. In order to complete the project, all students must successfully complete the inquiry project and presentation.
National Board Preparation):
The optional National Board seminar is a unique aspect of our program as it folds this advanced preparation into the Master’s experience so that the student may apply for National Board Licensure shortly after program completion. A teacher with National Board Certification and a Master’s Degree may earn a pay raise. Our own NBCT faculty will work with you to obtain this certification.
Faculty connected with local schools: Our faculty is in your school system regularly. Our professors help train teachers to implement Common Core Standards, Inclusion, Response to Instruction, Diversity, and Curriculum Based Assessment. Each class also focuses on strategies for teaching struggling learners.
Affordability: We offer financial aid for teaching professionals. You will be assigned your own financial aid counselor to help you through the process.
Academic Integrity: Mars Hill University is a non-profit institution with accreditation from The Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. The Teacher Education Department is accredited by The National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education and The State Department of Public Instruction.
