Guidelines for Advising Each Year of Study

 

 

 

 

 

FIRST YEAR

 

College Life

 

Introduce facilities and campus services by location

Teach students how to contact and where to meet advisor: how to prepare for advising sessions

Inquire about living conditions: roommate issues: refer to RA or RD

Introduce student to co-curricular activities clubs and organizations

 

Academics

Introduce majors, minors and departments on campus: begin to form an academic identity. Begin career and grad school discussion.

Introduce catalog requirements: familiarize with LAA curriculum. *

Monitor Academic Progress: refer to Writing Center, SSS, tutor

 

Personal Evaluation

Help students accurately evaluate areas of strength or growth

Discuss class attendance, risk behaviors, time management skills

Help students set goals: both personal and academic

Support students on a mentor/student level:  referrals as needed


 

 

 

 

 

SECOND YEAR

 

Campus Life

Encourage involvement with co-curricular activities: service learning, internships, clubs, campus  groups

Facilitate change of major and advisor: proper procedures

 

Academic Identity

Help students form an academic identity: major/minor possible concentration. Make 3 year course plan with specific courses.*

Work on an individualized academic plan for student: including Commons, Connectors, Major, and electives *

Monitor Academic Progress: Grades, Academic Plan

 

Personal Evaluation

Help student set and progress towards goals

Explore possible career or grad school choices relating to Major

Work with time management skills in terms of prioritizing activities


 

 

 

 

 

 

THIRD YEAR

 

Campus Life

Encourage students to become acquainted with the faculty in their major/s

Evaluate Campus Activities: are they helping towards my goals?

Possibility of Challenger position, study abroad etc.

 

Academic Plan

Crystallize Academic Plans

Fall semester: run a Degree Audit (from the Registrar’s office) and review Academic Plan to complete requirements *

Explore internships, fieldwork, collaboration with faculty and other students

 

Personal Evaluation

Research and Integrate Major with Career or Graduate School Plans: schedule, prepare and take GRE, internships, job shadowing

Continue to evaluate and set goals

Research grad schools, employment


 

 

 

 

 

FOURTH YEAR

 

Campus Life

Remind students of graduation rehearsals, and graduation activities, career fairs

Remind students of their role as alumni

 

Academic Plan

Review final Degree Audit, from Registrar’s Office

Obtain and fill-out applications to grad schools. Send GRE, MCAT, PRAXIS scores and transcripts to grad schools.

 

Personal Evaluation

Prepare for work or graduate school: visit career services: plan job shadowing,  

Advise students to visit the career counseling services: for resume, portfolio review; interviewing skills

Assist with portfolios resume, letters of recommendation etc.
