Life of a Mountain Lion:
Updates of What’s Going On Around Campus Through the Eyes of Mars Hill College Students!

 2/20/2012- Andre

Andre and the rest of the MHC cheerleadersHi my name is Andre Nichols I am a sophomore here at Mars Hill College. I’m a zoology major. At the moment my plans are to attend an internship at the Brother Wolf Foundation in Asheville, NC which will connect with me specializing in wolves for my studies. Outside of campus I’m involved with CSM (Christian Student Movement), Student Ambassadors, Mars Hill Cheerleading, Mars Hill Dance Team, and residential life as a residential advisor. I also do a little extra outside of campus for cheerleading. Every Thursday I attend tumbling lessons at Asheville Gymnastics home of team phoenix. My biggest goal for the semester is to acquire a job as a staff of the Universal Cheerleading Association, so I am definitely anxious for tryouts in March.

With everything I’m involved in I still find time to hang out with friends and have time to relax. My weekends are my main days off from all of the college duties except for homework if I have it. This weekend was a normal weekend for me. Friday after classes I took a good nap to get ready for the rest of my night. Some friends from Western University and AB Tech came to hangout and have some fun at the Pool Hall on Main Street. Saturday I woke up and went down to the pottery studio to check on some of my projects for my pottery 2 class. After that I headed down to Chambers Gym to cheer at the men and women’s basketball game. The games were great and I achieved a new stunting pyramid with me as the main section with a toss to extension. That night I went out to Asheville Mall and Cookout with some good friends. Sunday was my relaxed day that ended with being on RA duty while getting ready for classes on Monday.

As you can see once you get involved there’s no limit to the fun you could have here at Mars Hill College. I love it and I’m sure you would too.

2/16/2012- Shelby

My name is Shelby Johnson. I’m a sophomore at Mars Hill and I’m pursuing a double major in English and Spanish. My schedule is completely packed in the first half of the week, meaning there is never a dull moment. Every Monday, Wednesday, and Tuesday, I have three classes. As soon as my last class gets over, I go and help out at an after school program for children in low-income families for my community service. It is one of my favorite parts of the day because they are so much fun and make me smile, no matter what my day has been like.

On Tuesday, I went and set up for CSM, or Christian Student Movement. This is another escape that I have and we had a lot of people come this week. Our speaker was Jon Marsden, an admission counselor from last year. He spoke on Judah to continue with our Old Testament study. CSM, as usual, rejuvenated me for the rest of the week.

My absolute favorite part of my Mondays and Wednesdays comes at 8 o’clock; this is when Zumba class starts. I’m the Zumba instructor for Mars Hill and there are so many things that I love about it. For one thing, every class is diverse because there are people from all different backgrounds and majors. That’s the great thing about clubs and organizations here at MHC, I get the chance to get to know people I normally wouldn’t have come in contact with. Another reason is that it’s a great way to exercise without having to go to the gym. Zumba is my escape from the academic world and the best way to get rid of all that stress. This week we had a good turn out and the energy was especially electric. Everyone seems to really enjoy themselves, and that is something that always keeps me going.

2/6/2012- India

My name is India Ellis and I’m a sophomore at Mars Hill and a double major in Business and Spanish. I like to keep myself busy with organizations and on campus jobs like; Challengers, Ambassadors, Business Honors Club, and CSM. My weeks stay full with classes, homework, papers, and meetings but the weekend is my time to relax and enjoy myself!

I kicked off this weekend with a Saturday morning run and workout in the Mars Hill Fitness Center and then spent the evening in Asheville. Me and my roommate treated ourselves to a nice dinner and some retail therapy at the Asheville Mall, just 20 minutes away from campus.

Sunday was the highlight this weekend because it was Super Bowl Sunday! CSM (Christian Student Movement) hosted a party in the Blue Lounge of the Wren Student Union That is all of us in the picture enjoying the game). We had LOTS of pizza, chips, and drinks that when pretty fast because of the great turn out. Everyone lounged out on the new couches and enjoyed the game (and commercials) on the new flat screen televisions.

As you can tell, there is a lot to do around here. You should come see for yourself!

2/2/2012- Olivia

Wednesday is my favorite day out of the week for many different reasons. First of all, I only have two classes that day. One education class and one yoga class. I get up and go to my first class at 10am then go to lunch. Wednesdays are buffalo chicken wrap day in the cafe. Buffalo chicken wrap Wednesday is a holiday on campus…..its kind of a big deal. People walk a little faster on Wednesdays at 11am to be first in line at the wrap station. I then have a few hours of "free time" which I spend in the library listening to Pandora while catching up on some homework. I love the library because I always run into one of my friends (that is one of the perks about going to a small school). Around 2:00pm I meet my good friend Shelby and walk to our yoga class. My yoga class is by far my favorite class because it helps me relieve stress that I may have built up through the week. We all lay on mats while our professor plays soft music and tells us all to relax for a while (there is always someone that falls asleep). We then learn new yoga posses which helps with our flexibility and balance. I always leave that class stress-free and relaxed.

The best part of my Wednesdays is Blueprint. Blueprint is one of three Christian Organizations that we have on campus. One of the things we do at Blueprint is offer an open coffee house starting at 6:30pm (thats our coffee house in the picture). People drink coffee and get to know other students. Then worship starts at 7:00pm; we have a live band play worship songs for us as we sing along. Then we have a speaker come in an talk for a few minutes. After the speaker, we break into groups and have discussion on the message. Blueprint is a great way to catch up with some friends and relax after a long day.

Cleaning at Mars Hill Methodist Preschool for the 2012 Mars Hill College MLK Day of ServiceToday was the MLK Day of Service. Mars Hill does this every year in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King and all that he stood for. We partner with many organizations in the Mars Hill community and this day is meant to help the different non-profits in our area.

I was on the planning committee for this event so I led a group of about 7 students to a local preschool, Mars Hill United Methodist Preschool. While we were there we raked leaves and mulch, as well as cleaned the toys. Although these may seem like trivial task, the teacher we worked with could not thank us enough for what we did and seeing how much of an impact we had on the community was great! I encourage you to get involved in the wider community here and make a difference though service.

12/7/11 - Baylee

Baylee and friend, ready for Mars Hill College's Winter FormalMy name is Baylee Thurman. I am a senior at Mars Hill College.

I am an Elementary Education major. Weekends are some of my favorite days on The Hill. I love my classes and my professors but look forward to hanging out with my friends and going to campus events.

Fridays I leave my room in Edna Moore at 8:50 to go to my 9 AM Creativity Class. Creativity is one of the LAA classes at Mars Hill. Then I go to my Teaching Number Systems class with Ms. Rhinehart. At this point my classes are halfway done! I go to one of my education classes with Dr. Eggen—I like this class especially because of the size. There are 3 students other than me in the class. This Friday we had a party and everyone brought snacks. We also have planned to go out to eat together after finals as a Christmas party!

After class I go eat in Timberline with my friends and Delta Zeta sisters! We all eat together at least every other day. Some of us bring our lunches, but most of us use our meal plans in the Lion’s Den.

This Friday night I was on duty in Edna Moore lobby. When I am on duty I am hanging out with friends, making crafts, doing homework or cooking. This Friday we had a Pancake Dinner that was open to all students!

Saturday night was winter formal. Some friends and I dressed up (that is me on the right) and went to the dance as a group and had an awesome time! When we came back we went to Waffle House at 3 am. I am looking forward to next weekend!

11/30/11 – Annie

Sarah's junior piano recitalMy name is Annie Sutton. I am a senior religion major at Mars Hill. Typically, Tuesdays are my busiest and favorite days. I start out my day in Admissions where I do work study. It is a great place to work and I love Mrs. Susan, my supervisor.

After work study, I go eat in the Caf with my friends. Today they had grilled chicken salad with sautteed vegies of your choice! The sautee station is always very good and the other food is good too.

After lunch, I go to my Youth Ministry class. My professor is Dr. Mullinax, one of the main religion professors here at Mars Hill. In this class we have gone through different concepts in ministry and ideas that make leading youth more effective. Today, we discussed Worship and what makes Worship meaningful and affective for youth.

On Tuesday nights we have MERGE hosted by our Christian Student Movement. As President of CSM, I help set everything up and make sure the other leaders have what they need for the night and their areas of the ministry. Tonight we had a Praise and Prayer night! We sang a few worship songs, led by one guy with an acoustic guitar. Then, we had a time of prayer and reflection to spend time with the Lord and unwind a little, as this time of year is very stressful. We sang some more and then had snacks and fellowship.

Tonight, my friend Sarah McCoy had her Junior Piano Recital (that’s her in the picture). I went to that after MERGE. She did a beautiful job and is so talented! She did a few different classical pieces, as well as a more modern piece. She gave a lot of credit to her piano instructor, Dr. Fortney.

After the recital, my roommates and I decorated our apartment door for Christmas! Our Residence Hall is having a door decorating contest! We worked for a long time; I think it turned out really well. I hope we win!

11/15/11 – Emily

My day starts off in the Admissions Office for work-study. Many students on campus participate in work-study and it is an easy way to help pay for school. This week is one of the CFNC weeks at high schools and we are busy entering applications into our system.

Mars Hill College Admissions Blog - Spanish ClassAfter I work for a few hours, I head to my Spanish class. I am a Spanish minor here at Mars Hill and my class has only four students (that’s me in the top right corner). My professor is Dr. Wisniewski and she is wonderful. Having a small class allows us to communicate, one on one, with the teacher in Spanish and she loves hearing about our lives and the extra-curricular activities we are a part of.

After Spanish is LUNCH!! Wednesday is buffalo chicken wrap day in the caf and it is the best thing the caf serves!! Everyone waits in line for a wrap! Lunch is also fun because we get to sit with our friends and teammates that we don’t see in class.

I normally have an afternoon class, but our teacher gave us the day off so that we can work with our classmates on a group project we have coming up. The library has a lot of great resources to use for projects. I also have the opportunity to be the intern in the President’s Office this fall. I am able to meet alumni and Board of Trustee who still have a big impact on our campus.

Another activity I am involved in is the Bailey Mountain Cloggers. We are 19 times National Champions. We practice Sunday nights and Wednesday nights. I had practice tonight and we are beginning to get ideas together for our concert at the end of March next semester. I finish up my night working on my homework.

I stay busy but Mars Hill has a lot to offer students and there are a lot of different activities you can be involved in. I am also a Student Ambassador so come check out Mars Hill for yourself, maybe I can show you around!!
