Frequently asked questions for SOAR
1. When will I get my class schedule?
- Students who attend a SOAR session in the summer will meet with an academic advisor and register for their fall class schedule.
2. Why do I have to take placement tests?
- Placement tests are used as an advising tool for our faculty. These tests help us place you in the appropriate level class. They are designed to keep you from having to take a class that is too easy.
3. How do I ensure my space for fall 2008 is reserved?
- Complete the Housing and Tuition Contract and submit the $250 deposit. This will hold your space.
4. What else do I need to complete my admissions file?
- A complete file consists of an application, official SAT/ACT scores and a FINAL high school or college transcript. If you are a current high school SR, we will need your final transcript with a graduation date.
5. When and where do I get my student ID?
- During SOAR, you will go to the Wren Student Union to have your picture made and receive your ID.
6. How do I register my vehicle and get a parking pass?
- Take your vehicle registration card to the traffic and safety office in the student union during SOAR to register your car and get a campus parking pass.
7. I just had a sports physical for my high school; can I use that for my college physical?
- The Mars Hill College form is required. If your doctor is willing, he can complete the college form and sign and date it as of the date of the actual physical. The physical assessment MUST BE WITHIN ONE YEAR OF STARTING COLLEGE. For example, you had a physical July 13, 2002 to participate in fall sports at your high school, but you are not going to be starting at Mars Hill College until August 22, 2003. You will be required to get a NEW physical.
8. What immunizations are required?
- North Carolina has laws regarding immunization requirements that ALL colleges must adhere to. You will be required to show proof of Diphtheria, Tetanus, Pertussis, DTP series and Td booster within the last 10 years, a single MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella) dose plus an additional measles vaccination (two MMR satisfy this requirement). You are also required to have a TB skin test with a negative result.
9. Can I see my dorm room while at SOAR?
- Unfortunately, No. Our dorms are occupied almost every week during the summer with people attending various camps. As a result, your specific room will not be available for viewing during SOAR. The residence life staff will be more than happy to talk with you about room dimensions, what to bring, or move-in procedures during SOAR.
10. When will I find out my housing assignment and roommate?
- Your SOAR folder will contain a housing sheet which lists your residence hall, room number, and roommate.
